Together We Build — Beyond Parade Day!
The parade brings us together. What we build together can change our city all year long.
For 11 years, Disability Pride NYC has brought together disabled people, artists, advocates, students, families, cultural institutions, community organizations, and city agencies. These relationships are a foundation for what we can build next.
Honoring the Solidarity of Section 504
The historic 1977 Section 504 sit-ins offer a powerful example of what solidarity can accomplish. Disabled activists led the movement, and other civil rights and community groups stood alongside them, providing practical support and strengthening their struggle for disability rights. That solidarity helped make history.
Today, we want to carry that spirit forward through mutual solidarity. Disabled New Yorkers belong to communities across every part of our city — across cultures, generations, races, religions, neighborhoods, and identities. Our communities are interconnected, and so are our struggles for justice, our celebrations, and our hopes for the future.
Just as other communities stood with disabled activists, we want to stand with them — supporting their priorities, participating in their celebrations, and working together for justice, access, and opportunity.
Showing Up for One Another Throughout the Year
Building on the relationships formed through the parade, we invite partners to explore ways of supporting and participating in one another's events throughout the year.
We want to take part in the festivals, cultural celebrations, civic gatherings, arts events, and community activities that make New York City extraordinary — as full members and leaders of the communities that are also ours, celebrating disability pride, creativity, culture, and joy.
That might mean attending one another's celebrations, sharing community calendars and opportunities, collaborating on accessible activities, or bringing young people and experienced disability leaders together at events across the city.
Together, we can share knowledge about accessibility, identify barriers to participation, and work with event organizers to create more opportunities for disabled New Yorkers to participate on their own terms.
This is about exercising our right to participate, lead, create, and shape the cultural and civic life of our city — with pride, power, and joy.
New York City Belongs — Inclusive Futures
Project Access for All, a consortium and partner of Disability Pride NYC Parade, shares our commitment to year-round community engagement.
Through its youth-led initiative, New York City Belongs — Inclusive Futures, young people can collaborate with disabled leaders, families, and community members across generations to participate in cultural celebrations, community festivals, civic events, and other gatherings throughout New York City.
Together, they can celebrate disability pride, support the communities to which we belong, build friendships and solidarity, and help make events more accessible and welcoming.
Building Together, Respecting Each Partner's Leadership
Every organization brings its own mission, expertise, relationships, and leadership. We want to celebrate that work, introduce more people to one another's programs and events, and discover opportunities to collaborate.
Participation is voluntary and shaped by each partner's interests and capacity. Our goal is to strengthen existing work, not duplicate it, and discover new ways to work together when and where partners choose.
Together, we can expand participation, celebrate disabled leadership, and build collective power while respecting the independence and contributions of every organization.
As we approach the 50th anniversary of the Section 504 sit-ins in 2027, we have an opportunity to honor that history by putting solidarity into action throughout New York City.
Join us in shaping Disability Pride NYC 2027 and building year-round connections through disability pride, justice, culture, community, and joy.
